Heatherton Football Club

Message from the President

Now that we have completed our final games for the year, it is an opportune time to reflect a little on the season that has gone and also look forward to the future and the exciting challenges which lie ahead.

In 2010 our players stepped up to the plate in SFL Division 1 wining six games and beating five other sides in the process. We found it difficult to stay close with the top sides and this will be the on-field challenge for 2011. Another  objective is  to get a Colts under 18 side up and running so that we can provide local youth with a pathway through to our senior sides.

Our Coach John Bennett has decided to retire after nine years at the helm. During this time he has taken this club from a low ranked 2nd division team to a team which played in three grand finals and won two premierships and now competes in division one. We owe John  a great debt of gratitude for his achievements at Heatherton and look forward to his ongoing contributions to the Club in other capacities.

Where would we be without our volunteers? We are fortunate at the ‘Tunners’ to have a great band of tireless workers who make it all possible. A multitude of tasks are performed each week including  marking the ground, waterpersons, timekeepers, umpires escorts, bar, team management, runners and so much more. Our relentless volunteers were always there demonstrating wonderful club spirit.

The club is also blessed with a very strong committee, the envy of most SFL clubs. Thank you for playing an important role in the ongoing development of this great club of ours.

You will see on this website a list of our generous sponsors who have assisted this club and in doing so displayed great community spirit. I urge you to support them whenever you can.

We have enjoyed a very successful last decade and the challenge for us all is to continue to grow and prosper. I urge you to get behind this fantastic club as a player, sponsor, volunteer or supporter  and play your part as this proud club approaches a very exciting period ahead. The next few years will see the building of new change rooms and facilities, renovation of lounge, bar and kitchen areas, a new playing surface, and redevelopment of surrounds. In 2013 the Club will celebrate 100 years. What a colourful and momentous occasion this will be.
Finally, after three years at the helm, I am reluctantly stepping down from the position as President due to business and family reasons. It has been a very rewarding experience and I look forward to assisting the incoming Executive in whatever way I can and urge you all to get behind the new team.

Cheers,

Damien (Buff) Cody.

The boys have consolidated the club in 1st Division which has been an enormous task and we were hopeful of finishing the year off on a great note against East Brighton, however it was not to be. The early signs looked promising but after half time we ran out of leg speed. Injuries to players again cost us dearly. Kane Tucker, Corey Grenfell, Mick Sikora, Rob Ferguson, Matt Jamieson and Matt Sauer were our best.  East Brighton after being 17 points up at half time eventually ran out comfortable 57 point victors. They just had too much to play for and we wish them all the best in their finals campaign.... read more

Finally a well deserved victory for our reserves. The boys have been fabuluos all year and they have given their all. The addition of our old stagers Travis Sauer, Jared Sauer, Michael Bennett and Craig Rowell was a fill up for the squad and we thank them for their efforts. The contest was even all day but in the final term the boys showed a renewed willingness to win in their final outing of the year to run over the top of the Vampires to record a meritorious13 point victory. Many good players on the day none better than Daniel Beauchamp and Dave McIntosh in defence. They were superb in repelling Vampire attacks.... read more

Milestone

100 Games - Dylan Hand  14-08-10

Former South Australian Dylan Hand played his 100th game for the club against Cheltenham. Since arriving from SA to join his brother Corey, Dylan has represented the club in three grand finals having won two. He is a big time performer and blessed with awesome talent and capable of winning a game off his own boot. One of the best pack marks we have ever witnessed. His  booming right foot is deadly in front of the big sticks. Dylan's contribution to the rise of the club cannot be underestimated. On his day, one could argue he has been one of the best players to ever don the black & white guernsey. Dylan is a former captain having kicked 208 majors since debuting in 2005. A sensational effort Dylan and you should be proud of your record. Well done and we look forward to many more highlights in 2011.

100 Games - Pol Lavery  31-07-10

Some years ago a young shy kid entered the club and this week that same player notches up 100 games and boy has he come out his shell. Congratulations Pol Lavery on this fantastic achievement. Pol is one of the favourites around the club. Has been a solid defender over the years always matching up against quality opponents. Loves going forward and kicking majors. Pol is a past premiership player and captains our trips away. We all hope you are around for another 100 Pol. Well done. You have done yourself proud.

100 Games – Paul Connolly 01-05-10

The highly regarded Paul Connolly will this week notch up 100 games and what a player he has been for this club. An integral part of our defensive unit "Connolls" plays short or tall and often gets the tasks on the best forwards in opposing teams. Was sadly missed in the 2008 grand final due to injury. Had he played we are sure the result would have been different. Wonderful clubman who has taken over an important executive function at the club this year. From us all Paul, well done.

 100 Games – Matt Sauer 08-05-10

The highly regarded and quiet achiever Matt Sauer represents the club on the 100th occasion this week. Had it not been for numerous injuries Matt would have achieved this mark a lot earlier. Matt is a dual premiership player and the most reliable of backmen. Strong at the ball and blessed with fine aerial skills he occasionally delights when given free reign with a run on the ball. It is a true testament to his character that he has been able to overcome adversity. Matt is currently enjoying a most consistent season. Great stuff Matt and well done from all of us at the club.

200 Games – Lincoln Batten 22-05-10

In 1999 Lincoln Batten arrived at the club and this week he notches his 200th game. Lincoln's contribution to the club has been enormous over the years both on and off the field. A player of immense talent and remarkable durability. Linc possesses a smart footy brain and is passionate about his performance and that of the club. Superb high mark and long raking left foot kick who knows where the goals are. In latter years Linc has played mostly in the reserves. He has been captain, won two club best & fairests, won two grand finals, won the SFL Division 2 Reserves B & F in 2003 as well as the divisions leading goalkicker (82). A truly impressive record. This year Lincoln has taken over the mantle of reserves coach which is indeed a challenging task following the recent departure of retired players. He is now mentoring our younger squad. Remarkable achievement Linc, and one of which you should be proud.  A true Tunner legend. Well done Linc.

100 Games - Daniel Beauchamp

Daniel Beauchamp represents the club for the 100th time this week and what a performer he has been over the years. He has developed into a very solid/consistent player and a fine individual. A dual premiership player "Beechy" can be utilised in almost any position on the ground. His kicking prowess is renowned. You can be proud of your achievement Beechy.

50 Games - Josh Bennett

Josh Bennett takes the field for his 50th game this week. A fine mark and good kick, Josh is also a premiership player and his best years are still to come. Josh is creating his own individual football history and has come a long way in a short time. Well done Josh and we cannot wait to see the next 50.
